Breath Alcohol Test (BAT)

What is a breath alcohol test(BAT)? A breath alcohol test determines how much alcohol is in your blood. The test measures the amount of alcohol in the air you breathe out (exhale). How does a breath alcohol test work? Accuracy depends on the sample of breath being deep lung air (alveolar air). As the driver breathes out, the device continuously monitors the expired air using an infrared cell. The concentration of ethanol climbs as expiration continues, and when the level of ethanol stabilizes, the sample of breath is analyzed. How do you prepare for a breath test? You should have nothing by mouth eight 8 hours before the test. Do not eat, drink, or smoke until your examination is completed. This includes any type of gum or candy. Do not sleep or exercise for at least 1 hour before taking the test or at any time during the test. What is a positive alcohol breath test? Unlike drug testing, alcohol breath tests do not show past use. The device used in the breath alcohol test measures how much alcohol content is in the blood. If you have a blood alcohol content of 0.2 and above, it means that you have a positive result. Can you fail a breathalyzer without drinking? For example, if you have a rare condition known as an auto-brewery syndrome, you might fail a breath test without having anything to drink. Even more common conditions, like diabetes, can affect chemical breath testing. In fact, diets like the keto diet could also result in a false positive on a chemical breath test. Can smoking skew a Breathalyzer Test? According to a recent scientific study, cigarette smoking can influence your body's ability to absorb alcohol. Hence, if you have been smoking, any attempt to estimate the blood alcohol levels of your body will be skewed. What foods can throw off a breathalyzer? Food and beverages other than alcohol: Many foods contain alcohol in low enough content to not cause intoxication but high enough to throw off a breathalyzer reading. These include fermented drinks, like kombucha, ripe fruits, energy drinks, protein bars, nonalcoholic wine and beer, hot sauce, some nuts, and cinnamon. Can chewing gum make you fail a breathalyzer? While mouthwash contains alcohol, mints, and gum contain sugar substitutes that can lead to a false positive result. Can toothpaste set off a breathalyzer? If you've used a product that contains alcohol, the Breathalyzer might detect the alcohol concentration and report a false positive. Products that contain alcohol include toothpaste, aftershave, hand sanitizer, bleach, mouthwash, perfume, and cologne. Even spraying bug repellent on yourself can produce a false positive. Does coffee affect a breathalyzer test? While it might come as a surprise, the over-consumption of caffeine could trigger a false positive on a breathalyzer test. Book this service
